Dijital Team’s formula builds one of Asia’s Best Workplaces for Young Talent

Dijital Team has rapidly established itself as a premier employer in Sri Lanka's competitive IT industry. The organisation was recently recognised as one of Asia's Best Workplaces in 2025 and a leading destination in Sri Lanka for young talent by Great Place to Work®. Dijital Team is a prime example of how a people first culture drives business success. Peter Ward, Managing Director and Nithya Subramaniam, People & Culture Manager share insights about the company’s journey from humble beginning to an award winning employer.

Could you describe Dijital Team's journey from its beginnings to the current standing within Sri Lanka's IT landscape?

Peter Ward: Dijital Team started in Sri Lanka on July 1st, 2023, with one person on the ground. We chose Sri Lanka for the extraordinary depth of talent and expertise that exists to meet the needs of IT businesses globally. Since then, we have grown to over 280 team members in Sri Lanka including the newly opened Kandy branch and continue to accelerate growth to meet ongoing demands.

We have recognised that Sri Lanka possesses a superpower unmatched anywhere else in the world. We do not offshore to any other locations because this is where the magic happens. Our mission is to unlock potential and achieve more. Achieving more for customers, helping team members grow and accelerate careers, whilst making a difference in the communities we work in.

What core values drive Dijital Team, and how do they show up in your day-to-day leadership?

Peter Ward: Our core values guide everything we do. It is embedded in our DNA. First is ‘GSD’ – Get Stuff Done, focusing on successful execution, not waiting, just doing what is right.

The most important value ‘1% Better Every Day’, is continuously adapting and evolving in a very fast changing market and continuing to grow. The Kandy office allows us to keep getting better and adapt to changing customer needs.

‘Enjoy the Journey’ is about having fun and embracing team members and customers. Finally, ‘There's a Better Way, Find It’ is continuing to innovate setting ourselves apart from the rest of the pack.

We realise we are not the only offshore provider globally, neither the only offshore provider in Sri Lanka. Thus, we continue to focus on differentiating ourselves.

Can you share more details about Dijital Team's recent Great Place to Work achievements?

Nithya Subramaniam: This year, we received several recognitions from Great Place to Work – Best Workplace in Sri Lanka, Best Workplace in Technology, Best Workplace for Young Talent and Best Workplace in Asia. These awards demonstrate the strong culture we have built in Sri Lanka.

It is particularly meaningful as approximately 70% of the workforce falls into the young professional age group who continue to accelerate their careers.

They are at the peak of climbing the career ladder and chose Dijital Team as their workplace to continue to grow. Investing in each team members career progression is among our key goals as we continue expanding in Sri Lanka's competitive IT market. We invest and take care of team members, who then take care of our customers.

Our ‘Employee Value Proposition’ goes beyond what team members typically expect from an organisation. Through the EVP, we have created comprehensive benefits for team members and their families including health insurance coverage and mental health support.

We have made substantial investments in professional development. The Pearson Vue Test Centre allows team members to pursue professional certifications conveniently, access to Udemy training for continuous upskilling, and with the Microsoft partnership, team members gain ongoing expertise.

How has Dijital Team built an environment prioritising inclusivity and empathy for your team members?

Peter Ward: We designed the business around Daniel Pink's work on motivation. Our compensation in Sri Lanka offers maximised benefits for every single team member and is above market. We are placed in the top 25 percentile for each pay brackets for roles in Sri Lanka.

In a post-pandemic world, individual wants are different, including flexibility, the ability to work from home and spend time with family. As a remote first workplace we believe work can be done anywhere. The Kandy office provides a hybrid scenario for our team members in the Central province.

Another important element team members need is ongoing mastery, helping them grow, develop, and build their skills. We have curated learning and development pathways for career and professional progression enabling each individual to grow and master new skills. Whether lateral, horizontal or vertical moves, we support the journey.

Finally, it is about purpose. Giving the team a reason for why they do what they do and buying into the vision we have built as an organisation. A strong mission, vision, and values enables every team member to be aligned to business objectives and needs of our customers. The business is based on this blueprint.

We are not a static organisation. We adapt and evolve constantly, and this includes growing our benefits program. Recently we have introduced an Employee Assistance Program, implemented one of the best maternity leave policies in Sri Lanka to support parents and working with the Parenthood Global to support caregivers. We recognise parenthood is challenging, balancing workplace demands, supporting your partner, and often caring for your own parents. We provide broad support allowing people to achieve their best outcomes.

How do you approach hiring and nurturing young talent in such a competitive industry?

Nithya Subramaniam: We hire the top talent in Sri Lanka through a curated process of shortlisting candidates. We work with them to unlock their true potential and grow their career paths. We invest and focus on retention and provide the support they need to remain happy.

Candidates want to join Dijital Team because of the open feedback environment, anyone can openly share feedback and we provide structured support. Each team member has a business partner to raise any concerns and our weekly check-ins create a close connection among team members.

We create inclusivity organising social and regional events and support the broad cultures within the business. We offer flexibility in leave policies, along with helping each individual to grow their identity within Dijital Team.

What differentiates Dijital Team in this competitive industry, both from a customer perspective and for prospective talent?

Peter Ward: We believe Dijital Team is the best place for an individual to accelerate their career in Sri Lanka. Many organisations talk about people being their most important asset, but they do not actually walk the talk.

The key differentiator to genuinely accelerating careers is enabling team members to work on cutting-edge, exciting projects on a global scale, but doing so within a remote first workplace environment. It is a differentiator for us.

With remote work and multiple locations, how do you manage team unity and empowerment?

Nithya Subramaniam:We focus heavily on engagement initiatives. As a remote first workplace, we gather team members for monthly sessions and annual events, the Christmas party and end-of-financial-year celebration in June are truly epic. Team members from various locations attend with their families and partners.

We conduct weekly Speech Craft sessions along with the Toastmasters Club as part of professional development and providing learning opportunities. These sessions build communication skills and encourage open dialogue, supporting team members who may face communication issues.

Peter Ward:  Although we are a remote first workplace, we often talk about giving people a reason to ‘put pants on', in other words, a reason to actually come out of their home environment and be immersed as part of a broader, engaged culture.

Whether it is for religious, cultural, and social occasions, we include these different rituals and celebrations into our schedule to enable participation, together with remote activities to drive broader engagement.

With a diverse workplace across many ethnic backgrounds and geographic regions these rituals bring people together creating bonds in the remote first environment.

Can you elaborate about the new Kandy office and how it opens opportunities for Dijital Team as well as Sri Lanka's IT sector?

Peter Ward:We understand the university system in the provinces, surrounding Kandy, is of very high calibre, especially in software development capabilities. We currently have over 35 team members in the region.

It is also an opportunity to provide a space for people to come together, they can engage and connect without necessarily having to travel to Colombo.

What is important is to demonstrate to the community that we are deeply invested in Sri Lanka. There have been stories of organisations coming into Sri Lanka and then disappearing. We are now part of the core fabric of the IT community. It also demonstrates commitment and providing world-class facilities for team members.

How does Dijital Team contribute to Sri Lanka's IT sector and the economy?

Peter Ward:Dijital Team has a significant impact on the growth of Sri Lanka's IT sector in terms of foreign income generation. Based on the latest data, the foreign revenue brought into the country has been recognised by the Australian High Commission. We were also invited to participate in an investment panel in Australia showcasing the opportunities in Sri Lanka.

We contribute heavily in terms of sponsoring numerous meetups, user groups, community events or other industry gatherings. We also engage with university curricula through trade fairs and team members serve as guest lecturers.

Our talent acquisition team provides complimentary services to individuals through CV reviews, interview practice, LinkedIn profile assistance, etc. It is about contributing to the development of Sri Lanka's IT sector. We are also active members of SLASSCOM and strongly support their work as an industry body.

Looking to the future, where do you see Dijital Team's future growth, in terms of expansion and team development?

Peter Ward: We have always believed the future of the organisation is not just Colombo. It is wherever the density of team members exists. We are proud to have team members, from the Eastern Province, in Weligama, in Jaffna and almost every corner of the country. From an overall growth perspective, we will continue to accelerate growth.

In closing, what kind of international exposure do your team members receive when working with global clients?

Peter Ward: Our team members work with customers globally, predominantly in Australia, but also in the US and Europe. They receive international exposure and are engaged in cutting-edge technology. It gives them the ability to learn and grow in a supportive environment, and to embrace and adopt modern capabilities.

Nithya Subramaniam: There are team members who travel to Australia to work with clients and receive direct exposure. It gives them experience with Australian culture and work practices.
